Midwifery IUD Oversight

As a nurse practitioner student Olenka had the opportunity to do a rotation with a midwifery clinic. As a young mom herself, Olenka didn't have the best experience with her OB, and found the difference in the care provided by midwives extraordinarily superior.

Learning that midwives can be certified in IUD insertion made sense to Olenka, who saw first-hand the request for this type of birth control from moms at their 6-week postpartum visit. In most cases, these women are receiving a PAP smear as part of their midwifery discharge. This is the perfect opportunity to also provide the IUD birth control they are requesting.

In Niagara, family doctors/NPs are not routinely providing IUD services to women, and instead refer them to OB-GYN clinics, who either have long wait times (6-12 months) or refuse the referral altogether. This is an unacceptable form of health care for women, when a knowledgeable midwife can close this service gap and provide continuity of care. Olenka is happy to support midwifery clinics in providing this service to their amazing new mothers.

Certification for midwives to perform IUD insertion is done through McMaster University in a 2 part course: McMaster University IUD Insertion course for Midwives.

Fees:

Patient Fee for Services: $40.00 CDN per consultation/IUD order

Government funding through grants is available, Olenka is happy to help write any grant proposal.

If patients do not have private insurance coverage, the cost of the IUD can range between $250-$350.
